Q + A with Sam Maged:
Where/When did your passion for basketball begin?
My passion for basketball began when I was going into 5th grade. I come from a family of avid athletes, where we spend our winters skiing and snowboarding and summers playing basketball, tennis, and golf. I knew basketball was becoming the most important when I chose to try out for travel basketball, which meant giving up weekends in Vermont to stay in Connecticut and be part of a team.
You have played many sports at the competitive level, including soccer and tennis, what is it about basketball that you love the most?
I’ve learned so much about myself when it comes to basketball. As a player in a team of 5 on the court, I’ve become aware of how my actions affect the success of the game and have learned to work collaboratively yet effectively. The way we play together becomes the most important; a unified mindset means everything.
On the court, what role do you play and how can you be the most effective player?
On the court, I consider myself the floor general. As point guard, my knowledge of the game combined with experience puts me in the position to lead everyone in the right direction. When I am playing shooting guard, my ability to shoot beyond the 3 as well as my accurate inside passes make me a versatile combo guard.
What are you looking forward to most for your upcoming college years?
I am most looking forward to building relationships with new friends, teammates, coaches, and professors and having new experiences in a new place. I also love meeting people from different backgrounds and exploring new towns + cities. At my chosen college or university, I’m excited to network, learn, and grow from my mentors.
